Long Course Duathletes take on Auburn - USAT-SW LC Du Championship
A small but intrepid group of duathletes converged on Auburn, CA to meet the challenge of the Auburn Long Course Duathlon. Athletes started their run-bike-run with a 3k foot race, followed by a challenging 56 mile bike ride and culminating with a tough half marathon run. Congratulations to all finishers. Results here.

The Orange County Duathlon served as the USAT-SW Duathlon Championship. Nearly 100 women competed in the 2k-37k-10k event racing for personal bests, regional age group titles and to earn a slot on Team USA for the ITU Duathlon World Championship. The 2013 USAT-SW Talent ID Series Rankings are Updated
Rankings following the first race of the USAT-SW Talent ID Series are now posted. Currently leading the youth boys (13-15) is Matthew Paragas (100 pts), followed by Hayden Hansen (75 pts) in second and Zane Grenoble in third. In the junior boys (16-19) category, Connor Tabatabai (100 pts) is ranked first followed by Ryan Davis (75 pts) and Herculano Garcia (55 pts) ranked second and third respectively.
On the girls side, Mara Muslea (100 pts) currently lead the youth girls (13-15) with Kaylee Thompson (75 pts) in second place and Sierra Carmelich (55 pts) rounds out the top three. In the female junior rankings, Fiona Chesley (100 pts) is in first, followed by Andrea Brady (75 pts) and Tiffany Greer (55 pts).

March Triathlon Series - USAT-SW Collegiate & WCCTC Championship
The March Triathlon Series, hosted by the Cal Poly triathlon team once again served as this USA Triathlon Southwest Region Collegiate Championship. Held at Lopez Lake in Arroyo Grande, CA, the March Triathlon Series collegiate race saw over 270 co-eds competing in the championship race. In the women’s race, Erica Erickson lead the field by nearly two minutes covering the Olympic distance course in 2:10:41. Brittany Braden was second (2:12:34) and Christie Jackson rounded out the podium crossing the line in 2:14:42.
In the men’s race, a mere five seconds separated first and second place. William Jones broke the tape first in 1:58:34 with Yoni Doron-Peters on his heels in 1:58:39. Zack Paris finished strong in third with a time of 1:59:25.
In addition to the serving at the USAT-SW Region Collegiate Championship, the March Triathlon series was also the West Coast Collegiate Triathlon Conference (WCCTC) championship. Along with the collegiate races, age group races were held both at the sprint and Olympic distance as well as a high school category.

USA Triathlon Announces 2012 Junior Triathletes of the Year
The country's top junior triathletes in 2012 have been named by USA Triathlon. Tamara Gorman (Rapid City, S.D.) and Eli Hemming (Kiowa, Colo.) have been recognized as the top up and coming triathletes in the United States. In addition to recognizing the top junior athletes of the year, USAT has also announced male and female junior elite "All Americans". Hannah Rae Finchamp (Alta Dena, Calif) was awared Honorable Mention for the 2012 USA Triathlon Junior Elite Females (ages 16-19).

Xterra World Championship - SW Region Stars Shine!
The amateur men's and women's races at the 2012 Xterra World Championships were won by two California teenagers.
Hannah Rae Finchamp (Altadena, CA) and Neilson Powless (Roseville, CA) earned overall amateur world championship titles while winning their individual age groups (15-19). This is Hannah Rae's Finchamps' third age group Xterra World Championship title, while Neilson Powless secured his first. Congratulations to both athletes!

Nathan Tempe Triathlon Hosts USAT-SW Paratriathlon Championship
The Nathan Tempe Triathlon hosted the first ever USAT-SW Paratriathlon Championship on Saturday, September 23rd.
Eight athletes competed including Grant Berthiaume, Jacob Pruett, Travis Ricks, Beth Sanden, Ralph Pieplenbos, Jamie Whitmore, Edwin Figueroa and Aaron Roux. USAT-SW F1 Series Championship Race in the Books
The Pacific Grove Triathlon hosted the USAT Southwest F1 series championships on Saturday, Sept 8th. Twenty youth and junior athletes competed in a draft legal race in Pacific Grove, California. The series consisted of two F1 races at Hansen Dam, one at Fiesta Island and the championship race in PG. Race winners at Pacific Grove were: Mara Muslea TTS (girls youth), Michelle Swarovski Breakthrough Racing (girls junior), Duncan Reid TTS (boys youth) and Dillon Nobbs TTS (boys junior). These athletes were also the overall series champions!

The Pacific Grove Triathlon hosted the final race and Championship for the USAT Southwest Talent ID Race series. The race took place on Sunday September 9th. The TID series events are non drafting, sprint distance and began with the
Pasadena Triathlon in March. A total of 8 USAT sanctioned events were included in the rankings. Awards went 3 deep.

Pacific Masters Swimming Hosting Coach Training Clinics
Pacific Masters Swimming will be hosting two coach training clinics in late September. The first will be conducted in Mt. View, CA on Saturday, September 29. A second clinic will be offered in Davis, CA on Sunday, September 30. While the clinic curriculum was created by the United States Masters Swimming organization the material is appropriate for anyone who coaches adult swimmers. Triathlon coaches are welcome and encouraged to attend.

USAT-SW Region Aquabike Championship this Weekend
Nearly 200 athletes will tackle the Vineman Half Aquabike, designated as this year's USAT-SW Region Aquabike Championship, on Saturday in Santa Rosa, CA. Athletes will swm 1.2 miles in the Russian River and then hop on their bikes and ride a beautiful 56 mile course through the rolling hills and vineyards of Sonoma County. USA Triathlon Youth Splash and Dash Aquathlon Series Kicks off next month for Southwest Region
The USA Triathlon Youth Splash and Dash Aquathlon Series is rapidly approaching with the first event in the Southwest region taking place on 7/15/2012 in Pleasanton, California. In an effort to drive youth participation, USAT has developed the Youth Splash and Dash Aquathlon Series with thirty (30) events as part of the series. Each region will have three (3) events. The focus should is on participation, not competition. The series will expose youth participants to USA Triathlon and the exciting world of multisport. The events included in the series must be community based and focused on getting youth involved in the multisport lifestyle. The goal is to provide a low cost event that is community driven to expose youths ages 7 to 15 to the world of multisport. Each participant will receive a finishers medal, commemorative series t-shirt, and an experience they will not soon forget! Listed below are events taking place in the Southwest region:

USAT-SW Region F1 Elite Series - Race Standings Updated Through 3rd Race of Series
Nearly 40 athletes have competed so far in this year's USAT-SW F1 Elite Series. Current standings are now posted for youth boys and girls ages 12 to 15 and junior boys and girls ages 16 to 18.
Duncan Reid is leading the boys 12-15 category with 300 points having placed first in each of the three series races so far. Drew Daniels (125 pts) and Carson Gossler (115) are in second and third respectively. In the junior boys 16-18 category, Dillon Nobbs, is on top of the junior boys standings with 300 points, also having secured the top podium spot in each of the series races.
On the girls side, Mara Muslea leads the youth girls category on the strength of participating in all three of the series events. Muslea has 215 points, but is followed closed by Jessica Tomesek (200) who has raced in two series events, placing first in both. Leslie Zhang rounds out the current top three in the standings with 105 points.
The series championship (double points) is slated for September 8 in Pacific Grove.
Many thanks to race directors Jim Vance (Fiesta Island), Ian Murray (Hansen Dam) and Terry Davis (Pacific Grove) for your support and hard work in helping to grow the SW Region development programming for youth and juniors.

USA Triathlon Long Course Duathlon & Aquathon National Championship Events

Long Course Duathlon National Championship
June 3, 2012 Cambridge, Maryland
The 2012 Inaugural Blackwater Duathlon provides a challenging course, and has been chosen as the USAT National Long Course Duathlon Championship event, providing an excellent opportunity for athletes to test their limits.
The Blackwater Duathlon’s two 10K run courses are flat and fast traveling along Egypt Road, and will start and finish at the Cambridge South Dorchester High School.
The bike course consists of a two loop, windy and flat 70K bike, traveling though portions of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Be sure to keep an eye out for wildlife such as Eagles, Egrets, and Osprey as you proceed through one of the most beautiful and revered wildlife refuges in the country.
This the only qualifying event for the ITU Long Course Duathlon World Championship to be held on September 2, 2012, in Zofingen, Switzerland.

The 2012 I Love the Tavern Triathlon has been chosen as the very first Aquabike National Championship for USA Triathlon. Located in Richmond, Virginia, the 650 meter swim, and 18.8 mile bike has some rolling hills and one good climb to test athletes. The venue is set in the beautiful park setting at Robious Landing Park in Chesterfield County right on the James River.

USAT-SW Talent ID Series Rankings
Two races of the eight event 2012 USAT-SW Region Talent ID Series are in the books! Results and rankings have been tabulated for the TYR Pasadena Sprint triathlon as well as the inaugural HITS Napa Sprint triathlon. Thus far 19 girls and 43 boys have participated in the series which culminates with the Pacific Grove Sprint Triathlon, designated as the series championship.

The next race in the series is the TBF Tri for Fun Sprint Triathlon on June 2, 2012.
The next round of Talent ID Series rankings updates will take place in July and will include the addition of results from the TBF Tri for Fun Sprint, Redondo Beach Sprint and the Breath of Life Sprint triathlons.
If you believe there is an error in the rankings, you may submit your suggestions for revisions via this form. Please note,suggested corrections that are emailed will not be accepted.
**We have been advised that the results on the HITS website that we accessed today, 4/17 to create the rankings include incorrect ages for some of the youth/junior athletes ranked above. No need to contact us, HITS will provide adjusted results which will be used to update the rankings. Please note, the rankings will next be updated in July.

USAT-SW Youth F1 Series - San Diego
Race organizers of the second USAT-SW Youth Draft Legal Triathlon of the season scheduled for Saturday, April 14, 2012 faced a number of challenges put forth by mother nature. Confronted with a significant accumulation of rain in the day preceding the event, considerable winds and muddy roads, the decision was made to modify the event for safety concerns. Read more...

March Triathlon Series - USAT-SW Region Collegiate Championship
On Saturday March 24, 2012, collegiate athletes and age group triathletes alike converged at Lake Lopez, CA for the Cal Poly MTS 2012 triathlons. Age groupers competed in both sprint and Olympic distance events, while collegiate athletes vied for top honors at the Olympic distance, designated the 2012 USAT-SW Region Collegiate Championship.

USAT-SW Talent ID Series Underway - Pasadena Sprint Triathlon Results
The 2012 USAT-SW Talent ID Series kicked off this weekend with the Pasadena Spint Triathlon. Pasadena is the first stop in the eight race series which culminates in September with the Pacific Grove Sprint Triathlon.

USA Triathlon Duathlon National Championships return to Tucson, Arizona.
Run-bike-run specialists will converge in Arizona on April 28, 2012 for the USA Triathlon Duathlon National Championship. Duathletes will compete over the 5k - 35k - 5k distance to determine age group national champions and to earn prestigious slots on Team USA racing at the ITU Duathlon World Championships later this year.
In addition, the Paraduathlon National championship will also be contested and a sprint distance 2.5k - 17.5 - 2.5k 'beginner friendly' event welcomes all athletes for participation.

Registration for the USAT Skills Camp West is now open! The camp cheduled for June 25-29, 2012 and will be held on the campus of California State University Monterey Bay in Seaside, California. The 5-day overnight camp is for athletes ages 13-19.

December 10, 2010 - 2011 USAT Southwest Region Council Annual Meeting Planned
The USA Triathlon Southwest Region Council will conduct its annual meeting on January 22-23, 2011 in Los Angeles, CA. Members of USA Triathlon are welcome to attend the meeting scheduled Sunday, January 23 from 8am to 3pm. Interested parties should contact administrator Rachel Casanta to express interest in attending or for further information. Alternatively, athletes in the region are welcome and encouraged to provide questions or topics of interest that they would like addressed by the Regional Council in the upcoming year.
